Windows 7 promises a better-behaved Notification Area

In the long-running arms race between Microsoft and software vendors, the notification area has become the latest arena for third-party applications to intrude on the user when they should know better. To combat this, the user will be given more control over which icons they allow to be displayed:

Furthermore, a new Message facility is being made available to that the user can deal with messages when they choose to rather than when the application intrudes:

Oh, and that little vertical box in the far bottom corner is the new "Show Desktop" button. It's clear when there are no windows to minimise. The clock is identical to Vista so far as I can tell.
